The P-59 Airacomet was an early jet fighter operated as an advanced training aircraft by the armed forces of the United States.

History[]

Development[]

In June 1941, the US Government, together with Army Air Corps General 'Hap' Arnold, were informed of Britain's development of the turbojet engine. This led to a request, submitted on 5 September 1941, for Bell Aircraft to develop a jet fighter, to be powered by Whittle style turbojets built by General Electric.
