Garuda Indonesia, is the flag carrier of Indonesia, a member of SkyTeam and the second-largest airline of Indonesia after Lion Air.

In 1928, KLM set up an airline within Indonesia called KNILM, when Indonesia was still a colony of the Netherlands.

For unknown reasons, the company was dissolved in 1947, and its assets were transferred to a new KLM subsidiary, KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf (KLM Interinsular Service), which was nationalized in December 1949.

In 26 January 1949, after the Dutch were kicked out from Indonesia, the company was renamed to Garuda Indonesian Airways. The date "26 January 1949", was considered the birth of the company.

In 1985, the "n" from the word "Indonesian", and "Airways", were dropped from the name, making the company titled "Garuda Indonesia".
