Ilyushin il 20 russia 1948-35685

The Ilyushin Il-20 (Russian: Ильюшин Ил-20) was a double seat, all-metal construction Soviet ground-attack aircraft. The aircraft had a 15 mm protective steel plate covering. To improve pilot visibility, when launching bombs, the cockpit was mounted directly above the engine; however this caused more drag and thus, less speed.

Development[]

Development on the Il-20 began in the year 1947, with the aim to create a capable replacement for the Ilyushin Il-10. The aircraft was first flown by Vladimir Kokkinaki in the end of the year 1948.

However the project was cancelled, because it was thought that a propeller driven aircraft would quickly became obsolete in the emerging jet aircraft era.
